Meet our friend Jaime Haskell: 20-year Malibu local, designer, and mom of two teenagers, with a rare gift for making everything she touches feel a little more special. Jaime started her hat line, Lovely Bird, out of the very real, very relatable need to get dressed quickly while still feeling like herself: every piece is special and distinct, but never feels too precious to wear every day. That same generosity spills into everything she does, from her travel recommendations to the Pilates studio she'll point you toward. We're always curious about she's into, so we sat down with her to talk travel, style, jewelry, and her current inspirations.

For anyone meeting you here for the first time, how would you introduce yourself right now?
HI! I'm Jaime! California raised, Malibu local for 20+ years, and currently raising two teenage daughters while running Lovely Bird, my hat company. I'm currently reinventing myself one hat, one sourdough loaf, and one questionable carpool playlist at a time.

Can you share more about the inspiration behind Lovely Bird?
Travel inspires the whole collection, as much the places I imagine as the places I've been. The San Sebastián is a packable straw named for a Spanish beach town I've never visited, but pictured as the hat you throw in your bag all summer, while the Dallas is a soft felt fedora with a little western flare. A lot of my trims and embroidery are inspired by my travels to Mexico, Europe, and Asia, along with details inspired by my Native American heritage, so even the smallest finishes carry a sense of place. I love that a hat can hold the spirit of a place, whether I have wandered there or only dreamed it up.

Which hats in the collection are your trusty favorites that you wear most often?
 I love the Franklin fedora right now. Inspired by a little town in Tennessee it’s a modern twist on a western shape. Little taller of a crown, a stiff felt, and a simple suede band with a feather. I also love the Sedona packable straw fedora because it has a neck tie and it’s perfect for beach days, hikes, and the soccer field.

How do you describe your personal style? What is your daily “uniform”?
My personal style is probably classic with a twist. I love a good pair of vintage Levi's or my Chimala denim from Sunroom, a cozy cotton T-shirt , a soft cashmere sweater, and great sandals or boots. BUT I am a jewelry collector so I will always have stacks of rings, necklaces, earrings in every hole and a pile of bracelets. I keep the clothes simple and love to accessorize! If it's hot outside I’ll be in a slipdress.

What about jewelry? What jewelry pieces do you treasure most or feel most like a part of you?
My favorite jewelry that I wear most are my Dezso charms on the rad shark tooth chain, a CVC Stones necklace, my stacks of Larissa Laivins rings. I also love Marie Lichentberg, The Elevated Bohemian by Olivia Hateley, and my sister-in-laws fine jewelry collection Marisa Mason. She has made some insane bespoke pieces for me over the years.

Describe your perfect day in Malibu: where you go, what you do from morning to night.
My perfect day would be up at 7am with a cup of coffee while I watch the Malibu parrots in my backyard bird feeders, a hot pilates class at Good Point Pilates, a matcha from Cafe de la Plage. Home to play a game of Mahjong in the yard with friends, a salad from Pura Vida, and then a walk on Broad Beach. Evening I would make a fresh salad with sweet potatoes, grilled chicken, and homemade sourdough and then cozy up with my girls and my dogs to watch a trashy TV show.

Do you have any local “secret” spots (or just places where you love being a regular?)
Good Point Pilates studio is my home away from home. Sunroom is hands down the best place to shop in Malibu, I love the linguini with clams at Clark's, and the secret beach walk for me is Broad Beach at low tide. There are some great hiking spots off of Bonsal that get the best views on clear days, and sometimes I walk Moon Valley Nursery just for the peace and the smells of the plants. The energy there is so grounding.
